A WRECKED REMNANT OF AN INDUSTRIAL PAST
Ablach in Scots Gaelic means ‘wreck’ and in this man made environment it defines an intention for this project.
The intention is to use the contours of the site to position a kinked elevated ‘sky-walkway ‘ above head height which skirts around the edge of the cliff towards a natural promontory. The walkway being
elevated also allows for visitors to walk under and through towards the viewing platform, creating a strong threshold and projecting shadows far across the site and beyond.
This abandoned quarry speaks of the industrial, and at one time heavy machinery would have featured heavily in this landscape. These objects often perch precariously at edges and bestow an
abstract quality and beauty.
Ablach will be read as a curious object which harks to an industrial past in this site. As seen
from the car park, the cantilevered terminal will draw attention from passers by. Experienced
from the upper deck will be an exhilarating experience as you skim the edge of the quarry.
From under, the landscape will be framed and a threshold defined to the existing viewing
areas.
